Foil stamping is widely used in various of hardcover book, foil stamping also can combine with other finishing. Here are the three hot popular foil stamping on the hardcover book.

foil stamping

What is the foil stamping process in hardcover book printing :

It is a special printing process that does not use ink. It is a process of using the template installed on the hot stamping machine to make the printed matter and the hot stamping foil press each other in a short time with the help of a certain pressure and temperature. Then transfer the metal foil or pigment foil to the surface of the printed matter according to the image and text of the hot stamping template.

What is the function of foil stamping?

1. Surface decoration can improve the added value of products.

The products processed by the gilding process have clear and beautiful patterns, bright colors and magnificent visual effects. The combination of gilding and embossing process and other processing methods can play the role of turning stone into gold and finishing point of hardcover book printing, and also show the strong decorative effect of the products:

2. Give the product high anti-counterfeiting performance.

The positioning and hot stamping anti-counterfeit label needs to transfer the anti-counterfeit information layer on the label to the object to be pasted by heating. Which can not be peeled off and copied, to achieve the anti-counterfeit effect.

There have 3 foiling types for the hardcover book printing, one is flat foiling, the second is debossed foiling, and the third is embossed foiling. Why we will see difference foiling effect on difference hardcover? That is because the procedure for the foil stamping is not the same.

We see the flat foiling on a paper cover the most, that is because the printer will foiling the logo on the paper first, then mounted the paper on the grey board. This is the fast way and cheapest way.

Debossed foiling usually use on the cloth/PU leather cover book printing. For this kind of material, the printer will mount the cloth/PU leather on the grey board first, then foiling the logo on the cover.

Due to special request, there have one more effect-embossed foiling. Normally this finishing contains embossed+foiling, 2 finishing, the price will be higher than the other 2 foiling effect.

When you want to do your cover with foiling logo, you can tell them the size of the foiling logo, because the foling size also will affect the price. We have many difference foiling colors can be chosen for the hardcover book printing. Glossy foiling or matte foiling, flat foiling or debossed foiling or embossed foiling, we can do as your request fully.

hardcover book printing

As we all know, some professional design companies have made quite standard printing artwork. But some clients do not know how to format the artwork. They just make the size and layout as they want. So that when the files are sent out for printing, there are various problems that affect the printing. Today, I would like to tell you what problems should be paid attention to and handled in files for hardcover book printing?

Requirements for hardcover printing artwork are as follows:

1. No matter which software is used, please use CMYK mode for design and production. If RGB mode is used, color changes will occur when CMYK printing is switched. If it is not spot color printing, please do not use spot color.

2. The image resolution should not be lower than 300DPI. Because the image printed below 300DPI will not be so clear, affecting the printing effect.

3. After the final draft, please transfer the text to the path and upload it again to avoid being unable to print due to lack of fonts.

4. When prepare your printing artwork. Please reserve 3mm of bleeding outside the size of the printed product. If there is no bleeding, there will be white edges in case of deviation during cutting. And the text is more than 3mm away from the finished product line. Which is also to prevent bleeding error when cutting the content.

5. For black text or lines, please make them 100% black; If it is CMYK, it is easy to have inaccurate overprint.

6. For large areas of black, please use C40K100 to ensure black saturation.

7. Line width must not be less than 0.08mm

8. The spine content of case bound books can be designed. And we must add 15mm of bleeding to the cover, which will fold into the binding of the cover. Many customers only add 3mm bleeding on the cover, which is far from enough. If you are not particularly clear about the cover layout, you can contact us to make a cover template.

9. If there are processes such as hot stamping, bump, local UV, etc. on the cover. Please make a separate PDF for the elements to be processed and design it in black.

If you are not sure whether the files are suitable for printing. You can send us a few pages, will help to check if it is good for printing, if need any change will let you know in time.

Although cheap and easy-to-read paperback books and e-books have been widely loved by readers, hardcover books have not been eliminated.

Apart from still only do hardcover classic books. Most hot selling novels will have two versions: paperback and hardcover for choice.

hardcover vs softcover

Why is the publishers willing to do this kind of repetitive "useless work"?

The traditional practice of European and American publishers is to publish new books in three formats at different intervals. The hardcover edition is the first, which is used to attract book fans and customers with more purchasing power.

If the books selling well, then release a paperback version after a period of sales. Then after a period, they will release a mass-market paperback with a smaller format. One-to-one corresponding to readers with different economic abilities, to fully tap the sales potential of a book.

This strategy is also often seen in the film and television industry. For example, movies are always released before they are released on Blu-ray DVD. The income of movie theaters should be greater than the profits of video stores. Even the cost of hardcover book printing will be higher than softcover book printing. But, on average, the profits of publishing hardcover books are higher than publishing paperback books. So they still choose to print hardcover at first.

Movie buffs always want to see movies first in theaters with good acoustics. Just as book collectors want to get their hands on a beautiful hardcover book as soon as possible. From another point of view, libraries also prefer hardcover books. Because hardcover books are easier to preserve.

The publisher's editors are also careful. They will only publish a paperback edition when sales of the hardcover edition have begun to shrink significantly, but demand is relatively high. If a hardcover book is bestselling, publishers often delay releasing a paperback edition. Even if doing so threatens to stifle the book's sales potential.

But, the value of hardcover books is not only reflected in the profit level. A hardcover is a sign of quality. Hardcover is an expression of the publisher's intent to show booksellers, critics, and readers that this is a noteworthy book.

Why do publishers still publish hardcover books at a greater cost?

With competition from more affordable formats such as paperbacks, e-books and audio, will anyone still buy hardbacks?

As things stand, there's no sign of publishers ditching hardbacks: British hardcover novel sales rose 11% in 2017.

When e-books became popular more than a decade ago. Some experts suggested that the format of the book didn't matter. But they are wrong.

A beautiful hardcover book can bring pleasure. It is worth for cherishing, collecting and passing on. Readers will continue to pay for hardcover books, just as some people would rather pay to see a movie in theaters than on TV.

Maybe you will want to ask here, since the sales of hardcover books are still increasing year by year. Why does the entire paper book market still give people the feeling that it is dying?

The answer is that in the era of electronic reading. Perhaps it is more of a war between paperback books and e-books.

The advent of e-books threatens the market for paperbacks, which are closer in both release time and price. It's as if fewer people are buying DVDs, and people are going to watch them on video sites instead.

But hardcover books still have their regular consumer group. Just like the movie theater business doesn't seem to be affected too much.

"Nowadays, some paperbacks are not selling as well as hardcovers" said a report in The Economist.

Maybe people should have confidence that in this era. Paperbacks may shrink, but hardcovers and thick books will not die either.

Just like the famous Taiwanese book designer Chen Weishen once put forward. In the future, paper books will have new functions.

Yes, books will exist, but in a different form.

Maybe in the future, our judgment of a book will no longer be some simple abstract words. But the appearance of the whole book, the overall feeling, and the state of holding it in hand.

We have all seen how vinyl records turned into CDs. And now we see that CDs are eliminated and turned into MP3 downloads. But there are always a group of people in the world who want to listen to vinyl, so now record companies are still making vinyl. And only top-level music will anyone be willing to buy vinyl discs. Some people are willing to buy hardback book is not paperback, is the same reason.

The biggest advantage of print hardcover book is that the protective seal is strong. Which plays the role of protecting the inner pages and making the book durable. The inner pages of hardcover books, like paperback, are most threaded and nailed. And stick a cloth strip on the spine. To provide a stronger connection and protection.

There are several common forms of hardcover books:

hardcover book printing

First, according to the form of the spine, there are two kinds of the square spine and round spine

1. The square spine is thicker than the core. Due to the folding of the book's core and the cable. The height of the spine is higher than the book's core, and the more sheets printed, the more obvious. Thus, a hardcover book with a square spine should not be too thick. And it is generally suitable for the spine within 20mm.

2. Round spine, due to the different status of the front and rear book stickers. The fold of the book stickers is semicircular. Distributed on an arc surface, and balanced thickness. The flap of the core adapts to the cabochon of the spine and is concave.

Thus, thicker books are better to use round spines. The round ridge book is round after rounding the back ridge. And it is generally appropriate to use the core thickness as the chord and the arc pair at 130°.

Round ridges have two types: round-backed without ridges and round-backed ridges.

According to the material it can divide into two types. The same material from the ridge surface and a different material from the ridge surface.

1. The ridge surface is made of the same material. It is the spine and the cover and back cover are made of the same material as the whole piece. There are two kinds of ridges: square ridges and round ridges. Hardcover fabrics are paper, fabric, lacquered paper, lacquered cloth, etc.Generally equipped with protective seals.

But, there is a kind of book with a book title, pattern, etc.

Printed on the whole paper and laminated cardboard. Which is a square ridge without a protective seal.

2. Ridge surface material. The spine and cover production are in different materials. Usually with fabric as the spine. Stick the paper on the cardboard as a cover. This form is generally a round ridge without a protective seal.

A good hardcover book is not obtained by accident. And in the production process, the quality of each process needs to control. Until the final process product quality is fully qualified.

Paperback books can divide into the following due to some different processes:

softcover book printing

(1) Wire binding paperback: a process of binding paperback books with metal wire.

(2) Sewing binding paperback. Sewing binding is a method of using an industrial sewing machine with a structure to bind books into a book. Sewing can be flat or horse stitched, with the greatest stitch pitch of 10mm and the smallest of 1.5mm.

(3) Adhesive flat packaging. It is a new binding process that emerged with the emergence of synthetic rubber. Which began to use in China in the 60s, and has had wide use since then. There are two types of adhesive binding: cold adhesive and hot melt adhesive.

(4) Cord bonding. This is a higher-grade binding method. Which is more used for books with higher reading frequency and thicker books.

Its characteristic is that the binding line passes through the fold of the book post. And then locks all the book posts together with a thread. And after the back of the book is glued, wrapped and wrapped, ironed, and dried. Cut three sides, and all the binding work of a book is complete.

The difference between hardcover book printing and paperback printing.

Hardcover books are high compared with paperback books. Using hard paper, fabric, leather, plastic, etc. As covers, and some books are also clothed on the back. This means the process of hardcover book printing is very complex and demanding. The paperback method is simple, the cost is low, suitable for books with a small number of pages and a large number. The main processes of simple packaging are folding, sheet matching, and staple cover. And cut book edges, and the cover of such books is generally paper.

Whether it is hardcover printing or paperback printing. The production of a book will consist of two parts: printing and binding. And for hardcover books and paperbacks, the printing process is the same. There is not much difference. It's that hardcover book printing requires higher quality. So the paper used is generally high-grade, better paper. And paperback books can use ordinary paper.

In the book printing industry, board book often meant that book mounting together with two one side coated papers.

What is a hardcover book?
Hardcover book also known as hardback book, case bound book, bound book, etc. We usually refer to books bound with gluing or sewing as hardcover books. Hardcover book with this binding method which makes it open flat and uses it longer. Custom a hardcover book,we often with round or square spine.

1. The paper for printing is different

Because custom board books which have the standard of hardness and bright. Most papers are not suitable to print the board books. Coated paper, whether its hardness or bright, can meet board book printing needs. Thus, we often use two single side coated papers and with glue to mount together. If some customers have special needs, we can use one side coated paper and one thick gray board, then mounting together. Custom a board book. We often suggest 300g-350g coated paper. Because too thin, the hardness of the board book is not enough. But if too thick, the cost is too high and hard to make.

Custom a board book. We often use specialized board book binding way. We binding the board book often use machine mounting and artificial mounting these two types.

Custom a hardcover book, we often with perfect glue binding or sewing hardcover.

3. The pages and sizes need is different

For board book printing, we often suggest the pages between 8-36 pages, and the size between 3-10 inches. Because the pages are too more or size to large, the cost is too high, and hard to mount the book. So if your book' pages too more, we don't recommend to custom board book.

For hardcover book printing, whether pages or size, they're often without too much limited.

1.For the cover or illustration hardcover book printing, catalog printing, posters printing. We often use coated paper for such printing. Coated paper, also known as printing coated paper. Although glossy paper and matte paper are common in China printing services. Many people do not know that glossy paper compare to matte paper, which is better? Next, let's compare glossy paper and matte paper through four aspects. They are appearance, texture, price, and printing pattern effects.

Coated paper also called glossy paper.Coated paper is light in weight and high in gloss and smoothness. Coated paper is often used to print a magazine or high-end book's covers and pictures. Or gift box printing. Matte paper has another name, matte-coated paper. From this name, we can know that the biggest difference between matte paper and coated paper is the surface gloss. Matte paper is not reflective on both sides in sunlight. While the surface of coated paper looks shiny.

glossy paper is a high-grade printing paper made of base paper coated with white paint. Common gram weights are 105g, 128g, and 157g coated paper. The production process of coated paper and matte paper is the same. But the coating formula is different. And the matte paper should be light pressure when overpressure.

How does Glossy paper compare to Matte paper?

The following is a detailed introduction:

1. Appearance

The manufacturing principle of glossy paper is to coat a layer of white paint on the base paper and then calendar it. Its biggest feature is the smoothness of the paper. Which is very smooth compared to ordinary paper. Besides, there are higher requirements for whiteness. According to such characteristics. When facing the light, the coated paper will have a more obvious reflective effect.

In a sense, matte powder paper is also a kind of glossy paper. Its official name is "matte coated paper" or "matte coated paper". Compared with coated paper, matte powder paper is a higher-grade paper. The difference between the two is no obvious reflection, although matte paper is not as bright as coated paper. But the fineness, matte paper is better.

2. Texture

As the glossy paper chosen by most customers. Although the whiteness is higher, it is still worse than the matte paper. Besides, the matte paper's hardness is also higher, and will not be easy to deform. But the price of matte paper is more expensive. From the perspective of cost, matte paper is generally used in the color field. While black and white paper generally uses glossy paper or double-adhesive paper. Such as story book printing.

3. Price

Since the properties of matte paper are better than glossy paper. The price of matte powder paper is also higher than that of glossy paper. After all, we often say that you get what you pay for.

4. Printing pattern effect

The patterns printed on the glossy paper are bright and vivid in color. And the image is realistic, with an effect like photos. But, the product printed on matte paper have more delicate patterns and low-key luxury. And can also improve the grade of the product. So matte paper is often used for the best hardcover book printing.

To summarize, the price, hardness, and printing pattern effect of matte paper are higher than glossy paper. But matte paper is not as bright as glossy paper.
